- Igniting inclusivity: The inclusive beauty movement has expanded product offerings to cater to more skin tones, hair types and gender-fluid consumers. In 2021, WGSN predicts the movement will continue with the inclusion of physical and mental needs.
- Prioritizing sustainability: As consumer expectations grow, brands will need to embrace sustainable business practices, especially when it comes to water scarcity and how it will impact product development.
- Streamlining products: WGSN encourages brands to "streamline products, but offer better formulations featuring higher active ingredients and multiple benefits."
- Embracing small but mighty influencers: Beauty brands should explore fostering relationships with who have been found to have better engagement levels with their followers.
- Showing your dark side: According to WGSN, "otherworldly aesthetics are emerging for beauty, so create makeup palettes with dark colors that allude to supernatural themes."
- Personalization: From beauty devices to smartphone apps, technology is expected to play a key role in driving bespoke beauty experiences.
- CBD-based beauty: Consumers have welcomed CBD into their beauty routines with open arms. Moving forward, marketers are being urged to educate shoppers about the properties of CBD in order to reach new boundaries with cannabis.
- Intimate skin care: Kline reports that products trending in the facial skin care segment, such as serums and oils, are also gaining momentum in the vaginal care segment.
- Beard care is booming: Beard care products are the most impactful in the male grooming segment. According to Kline, beard services revenue has increased by 38% and transactions are up 37%.
- Industry compliance around sustainability and transparency: Key markets for natural personal care products, such as the United States and Canada, increased by 10%, according to Kline. The report also adds that "sustainability" and "transparency" are buzzwords with which the industry is complying.
- Amazon and Tmall: Online beauty retail offers consumers convenience and exclusive digitally native brands. Retailers such as Amazon and China's Tmall are two of the biggest ecommerce giants affecting the beauty and personal care industry.
- Indie beauty brands continue to disrupt: Kline states that these brands often find success with consumers by "entering the market with unique offerings, plus interesting founder stories and hero ingredients, becoming cult favorites."
Muted Skin:Not too matte or too dewy, just well hydrated skin was a staple through all the shows. We’re going to be going the Valentino way, where models faces had fresh hydrated skin, with just a hint of foundation.
Soft waves:Imperfect, tousled waves are a whole mood for next summer. To get these textured beachy waves flowing with the breeze like the models at Jacquemus, apply a volumizing mousse on damp hair and gently scrunch at the roots.
Smudged lips:A bright lip shade with bare, mascara-free eyes can feel transformational yet low-key. Models at Tarun Tahiliani’s showcased the classic red lip while Alessandro Michele’s Gucci show celebrated different forms of beauty with lips shades ranging from retro tangerine to show-stopping berry lips
Gelled back hair:Simplicity ruled this season’s runway trends, but it’s not a spring/summer show unless models step out with slick just-came-back-from-the-pool hair. While Burberry and Nanushka presented lean combed back hair, Balenciaga presented a slightly tousled look.
WFH, messy knots:Low maintenance, fuss-free buns have been our hairstyle for most of this year. Master the art of the WFH knot: Blow dry your hair upside down and knot it up in the centre of your head. In our experience, this hairstyle is super efficient while chasing deadlines at 5pm.
The almost smokey eye:Sheer layer of mid-tone browns creates a subtle drama. Models at Tarun Tahiliani, seemed to favour warm bronze eyeshadow and a thin line of kohl along the waterline. At La DoubleJ we saw a hint of shimmer in the inner corner of the eyes and smudged brown eyeshadow at the waterline.
